Fall Prevention Awareness

As we age, preventing avoidable accidents like falling becomes even more important. Our bones and bodies are not as adept at bouncing back as when we were younger, so taking care of ourselves is important. Here are a few ways to prevent falls both inside the home and outside.

Inside the Home

We spend much of our time indoors, which is why it’s important to create and maintain an environment free of tripping hazards. This includes having:

• Clear walkways free from clutter and chords, with rugs secured with tape or a non-slip pad.
• Bright lighting, especially in accident-prone spaces like bathrooms and staircases. Motion-sensor lights are both useful for  visibility and are cost-effective for electricity.
• Handrails in any stairways and grab bars near the toilet and shower in the bathroom.

Outside the Home

By living in a senior living community, you are free from chores like shoveling snow or raking leaves. However, it’s still important to be aware of your surroundings. While your home environment can be predictable, communal and public areas can present risks and unexpected hazards. Wear appropriate footwear for any weather conditions, and stay aware of your surroundings by paying extra attention to:

• Sidewalks and pavement that can be uneven and have tripping hazards
• Objects on the ground like purses, chair and table legs, and unsecured rugs
• Spilled liquid on the ground that can cause surfaces to be slippery
• Tripping hazards like rocks and sticks while talking in the park

Proactive Prevention

There are many things you can do to prevent falls and subsequent injuries. In addition to being aware of your surroundings work you can perform simple daily exercises to improve and maintain your balance. Here’s an easy one to try:

1. Stand behind a solid chair (without wheels) and hold onto the back of it.
2. Slowly lift up one foot while balancing on the other. Hold your position for up to a minute.
3. Repeat the process with your other leg.

How To Fall (and Get Back Up) Correctly

Did you know there is a correct way to fall to minimize your chance of injury? According to the AARP, here’s how to protect yourself if you feel yourself falling and can’t safely catch yourself in time.

Step 1:   Keep your elbows bent to give your arms flexibility and soften the impact, protecting your wrists and elbows.

Step 2:   Our heads are so important, make sure to protect yours. If you are falling forward, turn your face to the size to protect your nose and facial muscles. If falling backward, tuck your chin to your chest so you land on your back, not head. Which brings us to…

Step 3:   Try to land on muscle (like your back, butt or thighs) rather than bone. This will help cushion your blow. It’s easier to heal from a bruise than a cracked elbow, knee, tailbone, or hip.

Step 4:   Where possible, allow your momentum to carry you to a slow stop. A harsh stop could cause stress, the impact damaging your joints or bones.
